The Indian solar and wind IPP completed the 34 MW Bhatinda PV plant, said to be Punjabs largest, in just five months. The generated electricity will be fed into the state grid over the next 25 years.
Overall, Punjab is targeting 4.2 GW of solar energy. Welspun was awarded the project via a state auction. A memorandum of understanding (MOU) has also been signed to develop a further 151 MW.
Vice chairman, Vineet Mittal, commented, "More than ever we need to exponentially build up the countrys renewable energy quotient. Development is a necessity and to make it sustainable it has to be driven by clean emission free energy Our 34 MW (DC) solar power plant is our first step in the state in this direction."
Welspun says it aims to install 11 GW of renewables in India; of this, 5 GW are expected to be deployed "over the next few years," and 1 GW between 2015 and 2016. No further details were immediately available.
"Welspun Renewables is working aggressively to bring a difference to the countrys energy landscape," said the company in a statement released. "In line with Honorable Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modis 175 GW renewable vision, we are committed to establishing 11001 MW of renewable capacities across the country."
