PV systems are not entirely carbon-neutral, with steel used in mounting structures being a significant contributor. However, the carbon footprint of steel can vary substantially depending on its production methods.

Join us for this webinar where ArcelorMittal expert Jean-Louis Remlinger will introduce XCarb®, the low carbon-emissions steel, and demonstrate how it contributes to the decarbonization of PV systems. We will discuss the concept of carbon payback in PV farms, comparing XCarb® with conventional steel to illustrate how quickly the emissions savings can outweigh production-related emissions.

Jean-Louis will be joined by his colleagues Walter Perez Villa and Luca Marioni to further examine opportunities for retrofitting and revamping existing PV plants using low-carbon Magnelis® coated steel to enhance both efficiency and durability. Additionally, we’ll present a comprehensive Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and share the Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) of the Magnelis® coating, which provides a certified and standardized report on the environmental impact of our products.

Finally, we’ll showcase real-life examples of how XCarb® and Magnelis® have been successfully implemented in large-scale PV projects across Europe.

pv magazine Webinar content:

  • Discover how reducing carbon payback can accelerate the sustainability of PV farms.
  • Learn how smarter steel solutions can significantly lower the CO2 footprint of your PV systems.
  • Explore how low-carbon Magnelis® steel can enhance efficiency and extend the lifespan of PV plants.
  • Gain valuable insights from Life Cycle Assessments (LCA) and Environmental Product Declarations (EPD) to make informed decisions for your projects.

Jean-Louis started his career as Project Manager in the Engineering Department of Arcelor Florange in 2005 and then moved to ArcelorMittal Worldwide CTO to bring value in several projects and Group initiatives. From 2014 onwards, Jean-Louis decided to endorse operational management roles at ArcelorMittal Dudelange plant, first as Line Manager Operations for 4 years, then as Head of Department and Plant Manager in the frame of divestment carveout process. Since January 2023 Jean-Louis joined the Segments & Products Business Development department as a Senior Market Analyst and later as a Segment Leader for Solar. Jean-Louis holds a Master's Degree from Ecole Nationale Supérieure d'Arts et Métiers (ENSAM Paristech).

Walter Pérez Villa | Product coordinator, Metallic Coated, ArcelorMittal

Walter started his career at ArcelorMittal in 2014 as a Junior Research Engineer in the Global R&D department in Avilés, Spain. In 2016, he moved to Global R&D Maizières, France, where he worked as an R&D Engineer on research projects related to cold rolling, analyzing, optimizing, and implementing technical solutions for cold rolling mills across the group. From 2019 onwards, Walter transitioned to CMO Auto Packaging Electrical Steels at ArcelorMittal Flat Europe as a Customer Technical Support (CTS) engineer for Packaging. In October 2022, he expanded his responsibilities to include the role of Technical Coordinator for the Export Market.

Luca Marioni | XCarb Business Developer, ArcelorMittal

Luca Marioni holds a PhD in Computational Mechanics & Materials from MINES ParisTech (France) and a Master’s degree in Civil/Structural Engineering from the University of Pavia (Italy). He began his career at ArcelorMittal in 2017 as an R&D Project Leader at the Maizieres Process R&D Center, focusing on process developments for electrical steels, particularly for the electric vehicle market. In 2021, Luca transitioned to Segment Leader within the CMO Industry at ArcelorMittal Europe Flat Products. As of 2022, he has taken on the role of XCarb Business Developer, where he drives initiatives related to the company's low-carbon steel solutions, leveraging his extensive technical and leadership experience.

Anna Heimsath | Head of the Analysis of Modules and PV Power Plants department, Fraunhofer ISE

Anna Heimsath is the head of the "Analysis of Modules and PV Power Plants" department at Fraunhofer ISE. In the department, over 70 scientists, technicians, and students conduct research on pv power plants, integrated pv and pv power forecasting. One of the areas of research is sustainability and carbon footprint reduction of pv systems. Anna Heimsath has been involved in the development of solar technologies for more than 15 years. She studied production engineering at the University of Bremen and later earned her doctorate in physics, supported by scholarships from the Heinrich Böll Foundation and the Fraunhofer TALENTA program.
