Sunniest October on record for US amid hurricane disruptions

In a new weekly update for pv magazine, Solcast, a DNV company, reports that October delivered record-high irradiance across much of the United States, with a high-pressure system over the Eastern and Central regions driving a sustained period of warm, dry, and clear weather. Meanwhile, contrasting conditions in Canada’s coastal provinces and extreme weather in Florida underscored this month’s diverse impacts on North American solar generation.

Wafer prices drop, inventory levels rebound despite operating rate cuts

In a new weekly update for pv magazine, OPIS, a Dow Jones company, provides a quick look at the main price trends in the global PV industry.

Perovskite solar cell based on lead iodide treated with 4-fluorobenzylamine achieves 23.62% efficiency

By regulating the secondary growth of lead iodide, an international group of scientists has built a perovskite solar cell with low non-radiative recombination and defect state density. The device reportedly exhibited superior stability in both humidity and thermal stability tests compared to reference cells.

France deploys 1.35 GW of new solar in Q3

France installed around 3.32 GW of new PV systems in the first nine months of 2024.

Danish print finishing equipment provider offers turnkey pilot lines for perovskite, organic solar cells

Denmark-based Grafisk Maskinfabrik (GM) is now selling roll-to-roll turnkey pilot production lines featuring slot-die coating, available through its GM Functionals unit.

France announces new FIT rates for PV systems up to 500 kW

France’s new feed-in tariffs (FITs) for November to January range from €0.13 ($0.141)/kWh to €0.088/kWh, depending on system size.

Larger, thinner… and weaker?

With hailstorms in Australia and the United States severely damaging solar arrays – including “golf-ball sized” hail at the 350 MW Fighting Jays project in Texas in March 2024 – insurers are raising premiums and reducing or canceling hail coverage. Everoze Partner Simon Mason discusses the challenges the industry faces in minimising its hail risk exposure.

Tesla releases Powerwall 3 expansion units for more capacity at lower price

Each expansion unit adds another 13.5 kWh of storage capacity to the original installation with a maximum of three such units connected to a single Powerwall. Now available in the US, the new product comes at a lower cost and slashes installation time by roughly half to 22 minutes.

Cooling bifacial PV thermal solar panels with jet impingement

Scientists created a model to study bifacial PV thermal (BPVT) solar panels using jet impingement and built an experimental setup to validate it. They achieved a thermal efficiency of 62.28%, while electrical efficiency peaked at 11.22%.
