SunEdison taps Flextronics to manufacture modules in Mexico

SunEdison is partnering with U.S. supply chain solutions company Flextronics to manufacture its solar modules in Mexico.

The leading renewable energy company will use Flextronics’ solar module manufacturing facility in Ciudad Juarez. SunEdison will primarily use the panels made at the site for residential, utility and commercial projects in the United States. The group said it chose to manufacture at the Flextronics fab in Ciudad Juarez given its strategic location bordering the United States, just south of El Paso, Texas, with access to all major U.S. rail lines and highways. Flextronics will begin full volume manufacturing in the first quarter of the year.

"Partnering with Flextronics enables us to economically scale manufacturing solutions in different geographical areas to support our market growth," said Tony Etnyre, general manager and vice president of Solar Module Operations at SunEdison. "In Ciudad Juarez, Flextronics has successfully deployed a full turnkey PV module manufacturing solution, from line design to volume production, matching our existing manufacturing capability."

Flextronics' global footprint allows SunEdison to grow local capacity in high demand regions, Etnyre added.

Scott Graybeal, Flextronics senior vice president of Energy, said the latest agreement between the companies would increase Flextronics’ manufacturing capacity to more than 1.7 GW.

The deal expands SunEdison and Flextronics existing partnership. The companies first collaborated in 2011 and, as Graybeal noted, reached a milestone in 2013 with the production of the one millionth Silvantis solar module at Flextronics’ facility in Port of Tanjung Pelepas, Malaysia.

Flextronics specializes in design, manufacturing, distribution and aftermarket services.

  1. SunEdison filed for bankrupcy shortly after this, and I haven’t found information about what happened to this Flextronics plant in Ciudad Juarez since then. Is there any information about it? Did it close?
