STA launches online survey to diagnose UK’s solar business health

The U.K. Solar trade association (STA) and PwC invite all solar companies based in the country to participate in an online survey, in order to provide clear picture of the current changes in the national market. The results of the survey will be given to policymakers and published in a public report in early summer.

“At the STA we know many solar companies are having a difficult time and indeed some have been lost, and with them some highly skilled people,“ said STA Head of External Affairs Leonie Greene. “However, it is important that we systematically quantify what the impact of these policy changes has been, in order to provide a really clear and accurate picture”.

Major changes in the solar energy policies this year make U.K.’s renewable future look cloudy. According to the STA, deployment in domestic solar under the feed-in tariff (FIT) has dropped 80% compared to last year.

In the Ernst & Young’s renewable energy country attractiveness index released earlier this week the U.K. fell to the 13th, position, the new low for the country.

“The solar industry is exceptionally innovative and adaptable. However, it is undoubtedly facing some serious challenges in the U.K.,” says PwC Head of Renewables John Dashwood. “Now is therefore an important time to assess what the current challenges and uncertainty have had on U.K. solar business health today and in confidence going forward. How authoritative our report is will depend on how many companies respond – so we urge companies to please do so.”

The STA says that it will contact the 200 companies that already responded to a previous survey last year. Other market players are also invited to share what is happening to their businesses today.

The survey is available here until May 25.
