Canadian solar developer SkyPower will sign a deal to develop 1 GW of projects in Kenya over the next five years, according to a report being run by the PR Newswire service today (Friday).

The Toronto-based company, which claims to be the world's largest PV site owner and developer, and to have accumulated a 25 GW pipeline including 6 GW of recent project announcements in Egypt and Nigeria, will reportedly sign the deal on Sunday, the final day of the Global Entrepreneurship Summit (GES), which is being held in Nairobi.

The deal will be signed with the Kenyan Ministry of Energy and Petroleum and comes in the wake of Norwegian-Chinese manufacturer REC's prediction that the eastern and southern African solar market could amount to 100 GW by 2030.

Kenya's solar sector is gaining traction and a technology transfer and training center opened near Nairobi in April, backed by domestic and Kenyan investors.
