Another big battery ready to join Dutch grid

Swiss battery manufacturer Leclanche and Dutch energy storage specialist S4 Energy have completed work on a 10 MW hybrid energy storage system located in Heerhugowaard, North Holland. The system will serve the frequency containment reserve market as the Dutch grid continues to face serious congestion issues.

Wartsila to supply Netherlands’ largest battery

The 25MW/48MWh battery will be the country’s largest energy storage system to date. The project is touted as the first large-scale battery project based on lithium iron phosphate (LFP) chemistry in Europe.

Netherlands updates grid congestion map

Netbeheer Nederland has provided a new map for grid congested areas warning that grid-connection issues may also arise in less problematic areas. Solar, in particular, is claimed to be responsible for increasing grid-constraints.

Recyclable, back-contact solar panel from the Netherlands

Conceived by a Dutch consortium, according to Design for Recycling guidelines, the panel is being developed with two different encapsulants, one for the front of the module, which joins the glass and cells together; and a slightly different formulation for the back of the module, which attaches cells and backsheet together.

Ultra-thin silicon layers for 22.2%-efficient heterojunction solar cell

Scientists in the Netherlands fabricated a heterojunction solar cell with a layer of hydrogenated nanocrystalline silicon just three nanometers thick. The cell’s efficiency was measured at 22.2%, below the highest achieved with HJT cells, however, the researchers note that successfully incorporating this material into the cell stack will open many new doors for improvement.

Developers submit 4.1 GW of PV projects for first 2021 round of Dutch SDE++ program

The Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Policy is now reviewing 54,109 renewable energy projects totaling 5.17 GW in the first round of the SDE+ program for 2021. Solar accounts for around 80% of the total submitted capacity.

CIGS solar panels for offshore PV

A Dutch consortium is testing a 20 kW pilot floating PV installation for offshore applications with CIGS solar modules developed by Swedish manufacturer Midsummer. The panels consist of 144 solar cells and measure 4 m X 1 m, with up to 485 W of capacity.

Germany will continue to dominate European home battery market – no matter who is in government

Industry association SolarPower Europe expects little change in the line-up of Europe’s biggest residential battery markets in four years’ time, with a rush of retrofits as turn-of-the-century solar feed-in tariffs begin to expire, set to keep Germany way ahead of the pack.

3D solid-state thin film battery from the Netherlands

Developed by a spin-off of Dutch research institute TNO, the battery is claimed to offer higher energy density, longer lifespan and increased safety compared to conventional lithium-ion batteries. It will initially be applied in wearables and electric cars.

Netherlands’ first unsubsidized solar park

The 16 MW project is under development by Swedish-based utility Vattenfall. Construction is scheduled to start in 2024.
