In an interview with pv magazine, Santiago Barcón, columnist for Energía Hoy and advisor to Mexico’s Energy Regulatory Commission, talks positively about the results of Mexico’s third power auction, despite final prices coming in lower than expected.
Solar was awarded 55% of the contracted energy and 58.3% of the clean energy certificates in Mexico’s latest auction. It concluded with an average price of $20.57/MWh, which represents a world record.
The two projects, which were awarded a long-term PPA in Mexico’s second power auction held in 2016, have received financial support of $294 million.
According to the auction’s preliminary results, solar may account for 55% of contracted power with 3.0 TWh. Final results will be announced on November 22.
The Cubico Alten Aguascalientes Solar PV project is located in El Llano municipality, in the state of Aguascalientes.
The transaction is worth $1.35 billion and includes another 700 MW of wind power plants. The majority interest in the projects was sold to Canada-based CDPQ and CKD Infraestructura México.
Developers have submitted proposals to Mexico’s Secretariat of Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat) to build 754.7 MW of large-scale solar capacity at six locations, less than a month after several companies applied for permission to develop 843.6 MW.
The six projects are planned to be built in the states of Baja California, Sonora, Puebla and Chihuahua.

The Spain based multi-national is building two projects in Mexico with a total capacity of 270 MW. Both projects are expected to be operational by the end of 2018.
