The Nielsen farm is currently equipped with eight photovoltaics (PV) tracking systems, which are aligned not only to the sun, but also to the most energy-rich point in the sky, thus taking into account diffuse or reflected light. This so-called MLD (Maximum Light Detection) technology, from the German manufacturer DEGERenergie brings energy yields up to 46 percent higher in comparison to fixed installations.

Installing the technology represented a big financial investment for the Nielsens. “We took this step with our retirement in mind,” said Elfi Nielsen. “When it’s time for us to retire, the sun will give us an income. It’s there free of charge for everyone."

The “Producer of the Year” award is presented annually by the Canadian International Farm Show (CIFS) and the Canada East Equipment Dealers' Association to farms whose innovation and business practices lead to an increase in productivity and efficiency, thus playing a decisive role in shaping the future of Ontario’s flourishing agricultural sector, explains the trade fair.

Trade fair manager Rob Etmanski hopes that the award may encourage other producers with the examples of innovation, efficiency and sustainability. He said that this year’s winners certainly have clear proof of the extraordinary innovative force at work in agriculture, in the province of Ontario. Farmers Elfie and Chris Nielsen installed solar technology on their farm in Innerkip, Ontario at the beginning of 2009.
