Solar car “SolarWorld GT“ will go round the world for the first time with self-generated solar power

In Hall 4 at Stand A 20, the Bonn group of companies presents the topic of “Energy Generation for Sustainable Mobility.“ Fitting to the shows topic e-mobility, SolarWorld shows how electricity needed for driving is sustainably generated on your rooftop or carport at home. With the SunCarport, Germany’s leading solar module manufacturer is offering the infrastructure for tomorrow’s cars already today.

“Clean driving only works by using clean power. For this, we are offering the right solutions,” says Frank Asbeck, Chairman and CEO of SolarWorld AG.

??The SunCarport is equipped with alternatively nine, ten or twelve solar power modules made from blue polycrystalline or black monocrystalline solar cells. On a frame of anodized aluminium and powder-coated stainless steel, the modules form the roof of the SunCarport. It thus offers not only weather protection for one or two vehicles but also provides electricity and can be used simultaneously as a filling station for electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles.

Alternatively, the self-generated electricity can be fed into the public grid. Both the generation of electricity for self-consumption and the feed into the public grid are funded according to the German Renewable Energy Sources Act (EEG). Together with a clever energy management system and SunPac, the SolarWorld battery solution for the family home, the electricity can also be stored thus increasing self-consumption. ??

Germany’s leader in offering solar modules has also been developing solar cars for demonstration purposes successfully together with Bochum University for many years. Due to integrated solar cells, they manage completely without fuels or additional electricity supply. The current solar car, the “SolarWorld GT”, will be shown at the IAA. Within the next few years, as a first in automotive history, it will circumnavigate the world with the help of an energetically independent electric motor.

The starting gun for the circumnavigation of the world will be fired in mid-October in Australia at this year’s “World Solar Challenge.“ From there, the trip will continue to New Zealand. After that, the “SolarWorld GT“ will cross different countries on the continents of North America, North Africa, Europe and Asia. After 34,000 kilometers and two crossings of the equator, the solar car will be expected back in Australia at the starting point of the journey one year later.

If the circumnavigation is successful the “SolarWorld GT” will have broken several world records in one go. It would for example have covered the longest distance of any solar car ever. ??Hollywood actor and U.S. solar pioneer Larry Hagman will fire the starting pistol for the world tour.
