The contract, awarded to Nidec ASI by an important company in the sector, highlights Italy’s commitment to accelerating the transition towards green energy which will generate important economic and social benefits.

Nidec ASI was chosen to develop eighteen 1.35 GW battery energy storage plants thanks to its vast experience and technological know-how. In fact, Nidec is one of the leading companies in the construction of energy storage facilities, with 1.6 GW of BESS solutions installed in 121 energy storage projects in 21 countries around the world, including Europe, South America and Africa.

For Italy, the company will provide 372 modular and scalable power stations. The goal is to have the 18 plants up and running as of January 2024, 6 in Sardinia and 12 in the center-north of the country. The overall aim is to drive electrification in Italy in an increasingly greener direction through the use of renewable energy by storing electricity when it is most economical and using it when prices are higher. Once implemented, the storage systems will be able to supply the equivalent amount of energy needed to cover the average needs of one million Italian households, helping to make the country ever more autonomous, also in relation to gas usage.

The project does, in fact, offer a concrete response to REPowerEU, the European Commission’s plan to make Europe independent from fossil fuels well before 2030, and is implemented using Made-in-Italy technologies.

Furthermore, implementation of the 18 plants and the entire system will also have a positive impact on employment in the sector.

Nidec ASI, world leader in BESS, essential for promoting and optimizing the use of renewables, will be involved in the project with 4 of its factories (3 located in Italy and one in France), at full-production capacity for 8-10 months. In particular, conversion panels will be made in the Cinisello Balsamo plants (also responsible for assembly and wiring operations), while inverters will be manufactured in Montebello Vicentino and the auxiliary and control systems in Roche-la-Molière in France.

“We are particularly proud to be at the forefront of this project to promote the growth of renewable energy sources in Italy,” said Dominique Llonch, CEO of Nidec ASI and Chairman of Nidec Industrial Solutions. “This initiative demonstrates the excellence of Italian technology and can help Europe move towards energy savings. This is important news for the decarbonization of our country, which, by creating similar systems, will be able to strategically exploit its immense wealth of renewable energy sources and definitively lower the need of traditional energy sources while drastically reducing the cost of energy.  Following this, we are highly motivated and ready to work on many other projects in the energy storage field, to be developed in other European countries, in the United States and all over the world, carrying out a shared mission – accelerating the green electrification of our planet.”

Battery storage systems become an integral part of the new energy strategy and modern electricity grids, as key elements for realizing the vision of a sustainable and electric future. This BESS project, together with over 100 built and in operation around the world, a record of over 1.6 GWh of BESS solutions installed not only in Italy but in several countries around the world (France, Northern Ireland, Germany, England, Finland, Sweden, Portugal and Maldives) confirm Nidec ASI as a player deeply committed to the green energy revolution, curbing polluting emissions and accelerating the transition from fossil fuels to solar, wind and hydroelectric power.
