EU leaders agree on Strategic Agenda

SolarPower Europe has issued the following statement in reaction.

Walburga Hemetsberger, CEO of SolarPower Europe (she/her):

“SolarPower Europe welcomes the Council’s perspective on the EU Strategic Agenda for 2024-2029 which reflects the multifaceted challenges of our time with respect to democracy, security and competitiveness. The solar sector is in a pole-position to deliver on each of these strategic objectives as solar PV is the most inclusive, secure and low-cost energy source for Europe. Having installed 70 GW of solar in Europe in 2023, equal to powering 21 million more European homes and businesses, solar is key to a secure, prosperous and competitive Europe.

It is particularly positive to see the emphasis on ambitious electrification, the development of grids, and enhanced storage capabilities. That is exactly what SolarPower Europe’s new flagship report Mission Solar 2040 is asking for. We call on EU leaders to make this concrete as soon as possible and adopt an EU electrification and investment action plan in the first 100 days of the new mandate.

At the same time, we urge EU leaders to provide a clearer, stronger commitment to delivering the European Green Deal. This is what over 500 cross-sector organisations are calling for. Delivering the EU Green Deal is the driving force behind sustainable growth and security. This must be reaffirmed as a top priority in the EU's strategic agenda, including by re-appointing a dedicated Executive Vice-President for the EU Green Deal.

We urge President von der Leyen to stand firm in protecting her Green Deal legacy. Additionally, we call on the European Parliament to take a clear stance and confirm the Green Deal as a primary focus for the next years.”
