Alexander Rudberg, Interim Head of Development at Alight, says: “The grid connection agreement is an important milestone for this project. As Finland strives to achieve energy independence and decarbonize its power sector, this project exemplifies how large-scale solar can serve as a cornerstone of the country’s energy transition. Our next step is to secure a power purchase agreement with a forward-thinking company committed to sourcing renewable electricity, which will ensure the financial viability of this project.”
Onni Härmä, customer manager at Fingrid, says: “It's nice to get good news of the progress of energy production projects in Finland after a little quieter period. Alight's project, when realized, will be one of Finland's largest solar power plants and in a very good location in southern Finland, also in terms of the transmission system. By enabling projects like this, we help build a strong, renewable energy system for future generations.”
The project received a major boost earlier this winter when its permits, including the option for a 30 MW battery energy storage system, were officially approved following a positive decision by the local municipality. The planned solar park consists of three project areas totalling 84 hectares, or about 125 football fields of land. The park has a capacity of over 80 megawatts peak, enough to meet the annual electricity consumption of around 14,000 homes. This makes it one of the largest solar parks under development in Finland. Construction of the park is slated to start in 2025 and it is expected to be operational in 2026.
