Swedens Midsummer which produces solar cell tooling equipment for the CIGS thin-film solar sector has announced today that it has received a multi-million dollar order from an undisclosed client for its compact DUO solar cell manufacturing system.
The cleantech innovators confirmed that the client placed the order after successfully testing the machine at Midsummers Swedish plant earlier in the year, and will receive the system in October.
A compact, fully automated deposition system, the DUO tool delivers a high throughput of CIGS solar cells, and has been noted for its operational stability and ability to produce optimized layer uniformity.
"We have again shown that we are the leading provider of turnkey production lines of flexible thin film CIGS," said Midsummer CEO Sven Lindström. "Our focus on lightweight flexible modules appeals to the market, as well as our use of sputtering for all layers, and that the production process is an all-dry, all vacuum process."
Speculation as to the identity of the customer is rife, but Midsummer has refused to disclose the name of the buyer, simply stating that its client base is global.
"The global solar cell market is facing a paradigm shift," added Lindström. "Focus is shifting to installations on large buildings in cities. Lightweight and flexible thin film solar cells are ideal for this market. It is economically and environmentally more beneficial to use solar energy locally, where it is produced."
In February, pv magazine reported that German tool maker Singulus had begun production on a CIGS tool order, thought to be received from Chinese solar firm Hanergy as part of a $22.5 million deal.
