As a business prospect, producing hydrogen via sustainable means remains in its infancy. However, analysts appear increasingly certain that we are seeing the dawn of a vital new industry. In Europe, some countries (such as Germany and Portugal) have already adopted national strategies for the production and use of the fuel. And in July, the European Union also published a comprehensive hydrogen strategy as a central part of a climate-neutral Europe.
Frans Timmermans, executive vice-president of the European Commission in charge of the European Green Deal, and Kadri Simson, the European commissioner for energy, recently held a press conference following a meeting with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in Brussels. They presented the EU Strategy for Energy System Integration and the EU Hydrogen strategy. The plans will pave the way to a more efficient and interconnected energy sector, driven by the twin goals of a cleaner planet and a stronger economy.
