Tata Power Renewable Energy Ltd. (TPREL), a subsidiary of Tata Power — Indias largest integrated power company won two solar grid-connected PV projects of 50 MW capacity each in the Indian state of Karnataka.
The projects, which will be located at the Pavagada Solar Park in Karnatakas Tumkur district, were awarded under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission (JNNSM).
TPREL has received a letter of intent to develop the projects and will sign a 25-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with New Delhi-based power trading company NTPC Vidyut Vyapar Nigam Ltd.
Tata Power CEO and Managing Director Anil Sardana said the project further fortifies our vision of generating 30-40% of the companys total generation capacity from non-fossil fuel sources by 2025. The two solar projects will add 100 MW of non-fossil fuel energy to our total generation capacity, thereby, significantly increasing our green footprint.
Sardana added that the strategy was in line with the governments target of achieving 100 GW of solar by 2017.
In the next five years, the company plans to significantly add to its solar generation capacity, the chief exec said.
The JNNSM had initially set a target of 20 GW of solar installations by 2022 but that was later raised fivefold to 100 GW by 2022.
The Indian government on Thursday unveiled a new grid-connected rooftop and small solar power plant program that aims to instal up to 40 GW of grid interactive rooftop solar (RTS) PV plants by 2022.
