Germany: 13 MWh "second use" battery storage project

The growing e-mobility market is one of the drivers of battery storage manufacturing capacity expansions globally. A new stationary battery installation is attempting to demonstrate a potential “second use” for batteries produced for e-cars and scooters in providing grid services and through energy trading, once the vehicle electric storage can no longer be used in e-mobility.

The 13 MWh battery system has been installed at a recycling facility operated by Remondis, in Lünen, in German’s populous Rhine-Ruhr region. It is currently fully operational.

The Mobility House, an organization formed to support auto manufacturers in more than 20 countries, will own and operate the battery array, which will be connected to the grid. All four companies participating in the project are financial partners.

Although specific details as to how the battery array will function on the grid, The Mobility House has informed pv magazine that the battery system will be “jointly monetize[d]… in the energy markets.” Presumably this refers to trading electricity on wholesale markets between peak and off-peak periods.

“The idea of the storage [system] is, that it will revolutionize the energy markets,” said The Mobility House spokesperson. “With this project, The Mobility House enables the Energiewende and helps to achieve a breakthrough in electric mobility.”

The Mobility House is currently also developing projects that will integrated electric vehicle batteries as “swarm storage devices”, utilizing bidirectional charging and remote control technology.
