First Solar has agreed to supply Japanese solar distibutor and integrator XSOL with cadmium telluride (CdTe) thin film modules in Japan.

A First Solar spokeswoman, responding to an enquiry from pv magazine, said the deal, which targets 100 MW, will initially cover one year. She added that First Solar's shipment to Japan was expected to begin around September. XSOL will start distribution in October onwards in Japan.

Last year, First Solar announced plans to invest $100 million in development of mega solar power projects in Japan. The company said the XSOL deal enables the supply of its thin-film technology to smaller scale projects as well.

"This agreement with XSOL enables us to deliver safe and clean solar electricity on an even broader basis," said Karl Brutsaert, First Solar's head of business development in Japan. XSOL is a leader in solar power in Japan, and we look forward to partnering with them to realize solar power's promise in Japan."

First Solar noted that its technology "generates up to 8% more energy than conventional crystalline silicon modules, and a superior temperature coefficient results in greater energy yield in warmer climates."

"First Solar's differentiated technology will be valued by our customers," said Akira Waki, XSOL director. "Further, First Solar modules are recognized by third-party scientists as leading in ecological efficiency, and First Solar already has in place a globally-proven module recycling program, enabling us to meet our commitments to save the global environment and broaden solar power accessibility."
