The European solar industry has been undergoing rapid development in recent times, and more growth is expected in the years ahead. Against this background, the solar sector needs to demonstrate its suitability to become Europe and the world’s primary energy source. To do so, long-term sustainability under all relevant dimensions – environmental, social and economic – must be achieved.
According to the IEA, greenhouse gas emissions from solar PV manufacturing dropped by 45% between 2011 and 2021. Increasing biodiversity in solar parks presents significant opportunities, with nature-positive solar power plants boosting biodiversity by up to 250%. As photovoltaic (PV) reuse and recycling initiatives gain momentum, addressing the forthcoming PV waste stream remains vital.
Bringing together industry players, academics, policymakers and other stakeholders, this event will tackle some of the hottest sustainability topics for the sector across the supply chain, use-phase, and end-of-life. There will be dedicated sessions on carbon footprint, supply chain transparency, agrisolar, community engagement, biodiversity and more. During the event, we will launch a new report Sustainable Solar: Environmental, Social, and Governance Actions Along the Value Chain, and honor sustainability leaders through the European Solar Sustainability Award 2024.
