EDF completes first phase of 143 MWp PV project

The first phase of the Catalina Solar thin film project is scheduled to begin operations this December, with the generated energy being sold to San Diego Gas & Electric Company (SDG&E) under a 25 year PPA.

While EDF did not mention the size of the completed phase in its latest statement, in previous announcements it had said the first 60 MW would be completed this year, while the remaining 82 MWp is scheduled to be online by next June.

When complete, a total of 82 MWp of Solar Frontier’s photovoltaic modules, and 60 MWp of First Solar’s will be used in the project, which was developed, built and is owned by EDF. Up to 35,000 homes are expected to benefit from the electricity produced.

"Pacific Wind and Catalina Solar are the direct result of California’s renewable energy mandate, as well as the federal production tax credit and the investment tax credit. The PTC for wind, and more recently the ITC for solar, assist renewable resources in leveling the playing field against fossil fuels, which have decades of government incentives behind them," stated Mark Tholke, vice president of EDF Renewable Energy’s Southwest Region.

In related news, EDF presented Rosamond High School with a US$30,000 check for the purchase and installation of a solar-powered baseball field scoreboard.
