Duke Energy inaugurates 5 MW Mickey Mouse-shaped solar farm at Disney

The iconic Mickey Mouse silhouette is now also a solar farm thanks to U.S. energy company Duke Energy’s collaboration with Walt Disney to build and connect a 5 MW PV installation in the shape of the world’s most famous mouse.

The array is located near to Epcot on 22 acres of land, directly opposite Disney’s Yacht and Beach Club Resort at Walt Disney World Resort, Florida.

Constructed in partnership with Disney and Randy Creek Improvement District (RCID), the solar farm will now supply clean energy to the amusement park via a power purchase agreement (PPA) with RCID. Other customers – such as the nearby Four Seasons Resort and Hotel Plaza Boulevard – will also benefit from the installation.

The facility was officially opened on Tuesday, and now connected represents the same power output as 1,000 standard rooftop solar arrays, Duke Energy said.

"As a company that cares about the environment, we continually take steps of varying sizes to benefit the environment and protect the planet," enthused Walt Disney World Resort environmental integration director Angie Renner at the opening ceremony. "This new solar facility will help us in our efforts to conserve natural resources."

For Duke Energy, the installation is one of its most high-profile in the state, where the company is planning on installing 500 MW of solar applications by 2024, it confirmed.
