Comtec Solar to double Malaysian production capacity

Comtec Solar Systems – a Chinese monocrystalline wafer manufacturer – is preparing to ramp up its production capabilities in Malaysia in an effort to maintain a viable supply line to the U.S. market.

The company reported this week that it has begun the qualification process for supplying wafers to two unnamed U.S. companies, and will begin increasing its wafer manufacturing capacity at the Sarawak plant in the second half of this year. Current production capacity of 300 MW annually will be doubled to 600 MW, the company said.

The manufacturing plant is still in the process of being built, with construction having begun in June last year. The facility, located in Malaysia's Sama Jaya Free Industrial Zone in Kuching, initially cost a reported $374 million and will be supplied with polysilicon by Japan’s Tokuyama Corp., which operates a polysilicon production plant nearby.

Comtec announced that the unnamed U.S. customers had expressed an interest in the company's super mono wafers, and will seek to double production capacity before the end of the year.

In March this year, U.S. technology giants GT Advanced Technology (GTAT) agreed a $336 million polysilicon supply deal with Saudi-based Project Management & Development (PMD). The arrangement sees GTAT supply polysilicon for PMD's 25,000 metric ton annual polysilicon factory, which is also located in Sarawak, Malaysia.
