Quality Roundtable

At pv magazine’s first Latin American Quality Roundtable, held at Intersolar South America in Sao Paulo, we were joined by international players, like JinkoSolar and DuPont, as well as public and private Latin American entities, all of which are striving to bring more quality to the solar PV supply chain, from the U.S.-Mexico border to Tierra del Fuego.

pv magazine’s Quality Roundtable at the 2018 Renewable Energy India (REI) Expo, took place in front of a packed audience. It discussed current problem areas in the India solar industry; how solar developers and solution providers can improve the quality of PV installations; and innovative financial instruments to reduce the cost of debt and scale up infrastructure investment.

At pv magazine‘s first quality roundtable in Latin America – at Intersolar South America in Sao Paulo – we were joined by international players such as JinkoSolar and DuPont, as well as public and private Latin American entities striving to bring more quality to the PV supply chain from the US-Mexico border to Tierra del Fuego.

In PERC modules, both light and elevated temperature induced degradation (LeTID) and light induced degradation (LID) must be mitigated. What makes this tricky, however, is that the mitigation process of the first, counteracts that of the second, says Karin Krauß, R&D project manager, Rehm Thermal Systems. At the pv magazine Roundtable in Taipei next week, she will discuss possible solutions with cell and module manufacturers, and EPCs.

“Profitable yet risky”: This was one of the findings of a recent study, released in July, conducted by PI Berlin on behalf of Germany’s National Metrology Institute (PTB) when examining six Indian PV projects from the viewpoint of project quality. The report’s author Asier Ukar spoke to pv magazine in advance of his presentation on the subject at the Quality Roundtable at the Renewable Energy India conference next week.

Peijun Shen of Huawei discusses integrating bifacial modules into PV power plant projects from the Future PV discussion at this year’s Intersolar Europe. Bifacial technology is making leaps and bounds, and suppliers up and down the value chain have to deliver new technologies and solutions to pave the way for the next steps in PV systems.

At pv magazine’s 9th Quality Roundtable, held last month in Germany, a host of experts debated pressing quality issues, from LID in PERC modules, to hailstorm damage and faulty backsheets. In a video interview, Stephan Padlewski of DuPont goes into more detail about the quality debate, and how it has developed over the past years. He also discusses DuPont’s testing regime.

The 8th Quality Roundtable brought into sharp focus the challenges that Taiwan’s fast-growing solar market faces as it attempts to ramp up towards its 20 GW by 2025 PV goal. Typhoons, humidity and sea spray are just the beginning.

Held in September, the seventh pv magazine Quality Roundtable made its debut in India at the Renewable Energy India Expo. The discussion raised a series of pertinent points relevant to India’s soaring solar market, particularly concerning the need to place quality ahead of cost.

In solar PV, while the world seems focused on quantity – how many megawatts installed, at what price – solar power manufacturers, installers, and operators know that quality is crucial to the successful delivery of clean and profitable power.
