On Friday, Globo Brasil inaugurated a PV module factory in the the city of Valinhos, in the Brazilian state of São Paulo. Representatives of the regional government and Brazil's National Bank for Economic and Social Development (BNDES) joined the company for the ceremony.
The factory has the capacity to produce 2,000 modules daily, or 180 MW annually. Including both direct and indirect employment, the factory is estimated to provide jobs for 240 persons.
The state of São Paulo strives each time to bring investments that will help to make an even cleaner electricity grid for the nation, says Juan Quirós, president of government agency Invest São Paulo.
The state of São Paulo has recently approved tax exemptions to boost renewable energy projects in the region. These exemptions benefit both projects and the equipment they incorporate.
There is one other PV module factory in the state, operated by Tecnometal in Campinas.
Globo Brasil Director Manuel Flavio Coelho highlighted that this factory will help to diversify the electricity grid. The insertion of solar is going to allow Brazilians to have access to lower-cost energy and greater security of supply, stated Coelho.
In Brazil, there are local content requirements to access BNDES funding for solar PV projects. To date, only factories which produce PV modules, not cells, or wafers, have been built in the nation.
Brazil has only 25 MW of solar PV capacity, however, this figure is expected to increase in coming years. Already 2 GW of PV projects have been approved in auctions.
