3D-Micromac opens subsidiary in China, as PV markets shift to the country

After over-taking Germany as the country with the most installed PV last year, China is continuing to lead the way for the PV industry. Thus, it should come as little surprise that on the eve of the largest solar tradeshow in the world, taking place in Shanghai, China, German company 3D-Micromac announces the establishment of a new subsidiary to operate out of the country.

The new subsidiary, functioning under the name 3D-Micromac Laser Technology (Wuxi) Co., Ltd., is being set up in the city of Wuxi, not far from Shanghai, and will focus on the company’s business in the thriving Asian PV market. The subsidiary will predominantly focus on sales, but will also be responsible for the production and service of the company’s microCELLTM laser systems for PV.

The COO of 3D-Micromac, Dr. Roland Giesen, has been appointed director of the subsidiary, and has the strategic advantage of skipping a start-up phase, as the subsidiary will draw upon cooperation with local partners for the immediate commencement of production.

The German company has already shown ambition to take advantage of the booming Asian market, just last year receiving an order to provide 27 of its microSTRUCT OTF tools for PERC PV cell production to an unnamed Asian cell producer. This new step is considered a move in the right direction by the company, which wants to stay on top of market fluctuations.

“With this strategically important step 3D-Micromac is responding to current market conditions,” read a statement from the company. “It especially ensures close proximity to the customers. In addition, customer needs regarding speed of delivery, reaction times by local support staff, and availability of spare parts will be answered.”

It is an exciting development for the company, with the announcement seeming to have been strategically aligned with the SNEC tradeshow, taking place in Shanghai between 23 and 25 May 2016.
