pv magazine caught up with Halil Demirdag, CEO at Smart Energy in Munich last month. The Turkish- based manufacturer of PV modules, also provides EPC services, and is predominantly active in the European market.

The CEO discussed the company's new giga-fab, located just outside of Istanbul, in addition to his views on quality concepts and PV module testing, and the importance of proximity to Smart Energy's customer base.

As Turkey has established itself as Europe’s strongest PV market, with 2 GW of newly installed capacity in 2017, it is worth paying some attention to the market and its players. Indeed, the country not only boasts a massive installation pipeline, but has also recently ramped up its manufacturing capacity.

In the video interview, Demirdag highlighted the importance of the proximity of Smart Energy’s new giga-fab to the European market. The site is located just outside Istanbul, and customers are welcome to come and check out the quality of the production, Demirdag said.

As the CEO emphasized, quality is an essential component of PV module production; and he firmly believes that customers reap many benefits from spending more on their products. For this purpose, Smart Energy's modules have undergone a rigorous testing regime that exceeds normal industry standards, he said.

Delivery times are an essential aspect in a vibrant PV market, he continued. Due to the fabs location, modules can be delivered anywhere in Europe within five days, by truck. For smaller orders, the company also plans to set up a warehouse in Europe, which will be able to deliver modules within a day.
