The Ministry of energy and water of Afghanistan (MEW) has awarded the contract to build a 40 MW hybrid solar plant at the Hisar-e-Shahi Industrial Park (HIP), which is located 22 km southeast of Jalalabad City, in the eastern province of Nangarhar, to Shuangdeng Group Co Ltd., a Chinese provider of communications back-up power systems, energy storage batteries, start-up batteries, super capacitors, and other related products.
According to the MEW, the value of the contract is around $59.7 million. The project was tendered, together with two more hybrid solar facilities with a capacity of 5.5 MW and 10 MW, respectively, in September 2017.
Six months earlier, the Afghanistan’s High Economic Council approved a plan to deploy 100 MW of renewable energy generation capacity, which included 65 MW of hybrid solar.
Afghanistan’s Ministry of Energy and Water aims to install 500 MW of PV plants by 2020. The country’s renewable energy policy is targeting 4 GW to 5 GW of new renewable energy capacity by 2030.
