China’s cumulative PV capacity hits 130 GW, to reach 250 GW by 2020

Many have predicted China’s 2017 solar PV install rates. The Chinese Government's NEA has today, January 22, officially released figures, which say a total of 52.83 GW were installed, accounting for over 50% of the global total.

AECEA estimates that of this figure, 19 to 20 GW comprised distributed solar, which represents a four-fold increase on 2016, where just 4.23 GW were installed in this sector.

It says cumulative solar PV installs in China have now reached 130.25 GW, thus outpacing the government’s initial target of 105 GW by 2020.

AECEA forecasts that this cumulative figure will grow to between 250 to 255 GW by 2020, with 2018, 2019 and 2020 seeing around 40 to 45 GW of new PV installs, respectively. Cumulative wind capacity, in comparison, is said to be 163 GW.

Overall in 2017, AECEA says that new clean energy installs overtook thermal power. A total of 133 GW of installs were recorded, including 12.8 GW of hydro and 45.78 GW of thermal power.
