Switzerland’s Meyer Burger, which provides tooling equipment for the global solar industry, has revealed today that is has received a new upgrade order for its MB PERC cell tool, the MAiA 2.1.
The order is worth CHF 15 million ($15 million) and was placed by an existing Asian manufacturer, with delivery and installation penciled in for the second quarter of this year.
Meyer Burger’s MAiA 2.1. tool is a cell coating platform for PERC cells, and is an upgrade on previous iterations. The tool order continues a rising demand among Asian solar cell and module developers for PERC tooling, and follows a few weeks after a similar order – worth $23.7 million – was placed for the same tool by an unnamed Chinese manufacturer.
So far in 2017, orders for Meyer Burger’s PERC tooling technology are estimated to surpassed $100 million. Energy Trend, a Taiwan-based analyst, forecasts that PERC capacity expansions in 2017 may range between 12 to 15 GW.
