BayWa r.e. renewable energy GmbH has commenced construction on a 45.4 MW solar farm in France the largest solar project in the companys history.
The La Coste solar farm will cover 115 hectares across five sites in the Aquitane countryside near Bordeaux. As the main contractor, BayWa r.e. will build the individual plants in cooperation with a regional project developer.
The project will supply 60,000 MWh or solar power each year, enough to power 15,000 households or fuel 30,000 electric cars driving 10,000 km annually.
The PV industry in France has stagnated in 2013, with just 207 MW of solar PV capacity installed in the first six months of the year a decrease of 73% in just 12 months.
Completion of La Coste is expected in July 2014.
