The projects have been announced by AE-AMD Renewable Energy, a joint venture between Spain-based AMDA energia and South African Alt-E Technologies, and SunPower-owned Tenesol.

Work on the 22 MW Herbert photovoltaic project is already underway, while construction is slated to begin on the 11 MW Greefspan project in the coming weeks. Both plants, located near Douglas, are expected to be completed in Q2 2014.

When finished, they will comprise 138,000 Tenesol TE 240 photovoltaic panels on single-axis trackers, manufactured in South Africa.

AE-AMD Renewable Energy in partnership with the IDEAS Fund will own both projects, although Tenesol also has a 5% share in them. Meanwhile, all generated electricity will be sold to Eskom.
