China launches large battery energy storage station

Share

The station in Zhangbei, Hebei Province, northwest of Beijing, combines 140 MW of renewable energy generation (wind and solar), 36 MWh of energy storage and a smart power transmission system. Vast amounts of renewable energy can be transferred to the grid in a stable manner via this battery energy storage station. The project, a part of the Golden Sun program, is designed by SGCC.

SGCC decided to work with BYD because of the company's iron-phosphate battery technology as well as their ‘peak shaving and load leveling charge and discharge' methodologies. BYD's battery energy storage system solution for the smart grid improves efficiencies of renewable energies by five to 10 percent. The first phase investment with 100 MW wind energy, 40 MW solar energy and 36 MWh of battery is worth over USD500 million.

"The large-scale implementation of clean and green energy, such as wind and solar power, can only be realized when the technical difficulties of this new energy application in the utility system are resolved," said Xiu Binglin, Deputy Director of the National Energy Administration. "This State Grid project demonstrates a solution and will be the model of development for China's new energy resources."
