US: 45 MW Californian solar project begins operations

The 45 megawatt (MW) Avenal Solar Generating Facility, located in Kings County, was developed by Eurus Energy America. Jointly owned by the company and NRG Solar, the project cost around USD$220 million to implement. The generated power will be sold to Pacific Gas & Electric under separate 20-year power purchase agreements.

Comprised of three separate installations – Avenal Park (six MW), Sun City (20 MW) and Sand Drag (19 MW) – the facility is spread across a 200 acre site. Sharp Corporation provided the approximately 450,000 solar panels needed.

Overall, it is expected to generate enough power to meet the needs of 36,000 homes; up to 200 new jobs are also projected to be created.

"Only two years ago, NRG began its expansion into solar power by bringing online the largest photovoltaic plant in California at that time – today, we repeat that accomplishment by commencing operations at Avenal," commented Tom Doyle, president of NRG's Solar and West Region.
