Both mono- and multi-crystalline silicon solar modules will be produced at the new factory, which was originally expected to be opened in mid-March.
By the middle of the year, the plant is expected to produce 370,000 modules, or 60 megawatts (MW) annually: the potential to ramp up to 180 MW exists. At full capacity, the company says the plant will employ 200 people. The modules will be distributed throughout North America.
During the opening ceremony, which attracted over 250 guests, Minister Sandra Pupatello announced that the province has approved a 2.2 million loan to the company to support the first 60 MW of production.
Silfab says it will invest approximately 10 million for the first 60 MW of plant production, and has already initiated a further expansion of that capacity.?
"I inaugurated in Italy, exactly 30 years ago, a company that marked the start of the photovoltaic industry in my country and I now find myself doing the same here. No greater satisfaction could exist for me than seeing the fruits of the know-how acquired over time that will now help the development of solar in the province of Ontario," stated Franco Traverso, CEO Silfab Ontario Inc.??
In December, Silfab announced that it had signed preliminary contracts for the delivery of 102 MW of solar modules.
