In a bid to stabilize its electricity grid and supply reserve power, Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) is developing an energy storage system, which is set to be the largest of its kind when complete.
The 24 MW project will see Germanys SMA delivering 24 of its Sunny Central Storage 1000 battery inverters and system technology to South Korea this November. SMA is said to be the only foreign manufacturer working on the project.
The companys Korean partner, Bosung Powertec Co. Ltd will install the inverters, which will be used in conjunction with large lithium-ion batteries from an unidentified, "leading" Korean manufacturer. Once complete, the system will be tested over a six month period.
An island nation, with North Korea as a neighbor, South Korea cannot rely on the importing of power to stabilize its grid. To address this problem, KEPCO has said it will issue invitations to bid on additional frequency regulation projects, each 200 MW in size, to supply reserve power. "This is intended to guarantee long-term reliability of the Korean utility grid," said SMA in a statement released.
