JinkoSolar to supply 122 MW of modules for Chilean solar project

Share

Today JinkoSolar announced that has supplied 122 MW of PV modules to U.S.-based PV developer Pattern Energy for its El Conejo solar project in Northern Chile. El Conejo will be one of the largest PV projects built to date in the nation, which is the largest solar market in Latin America.

El Conejo has secured a 22-year power purchase agreement with a mining company, and when completed in the second half of 2016 will supply 65% of the electric needs of the Los Pelambres copper mine.

With its enormous demand for power, Chile’s mining industry has been an attractive target for developers since the early days of the nation’s solar market. However mining companies have also been tough to negotiate with, and contracts such as Pattern’s can take a long time to secure.

The El Conejo project will be located in the Antofagasta Region of Chile, and will be connected to the nation’s SIC (central) grid.

At the end of March Chile had installed 1.1 GW-AC of solar PV projects, and more than 2 GW are under construction. New projects continue to be announced, and earlier this week Chilean President Michele Bachelet, SunPower and Total announced a contract for a 100 MW solar PV project which will supply 42% of the power for the metro in Santiago.
