India and Iran to cooperate on renewable energy projects

Share

Indian Minister for New and Renewable Energy, Farooq Abdullah met with Iranian Energy Minister, Majid Namjou in Tehran, Iran this week. At the meeting, Abdullah highlighted the progress of India’s National Solar Mission that has thus far, significantly increased installed photovoltaic capacity and facilitated a drastic fall in system costs. Namjou, in turn, has requested for private Indian investors to establish pilot projects in Iran.

The current plan is for Iran to move towards the generation of more than 1,000 megawatts (MW) via renewables and Namjou sees India as a pivotal partner to achieve this. Sources add that the country has the capacity to establish 60,000 MW of solar projects and 40,000 MW of wind farms. The generated clean energy will not only be used for domestic purposes, but also be exported to India as an alternative to gas.

According to a study by researchers from Monash University and the Centre of Renewable Energy Research and Application in Tehran, Iran has the optimal conditions for solar energy generation.
