1 MW PV plant online in Chile

Located in the north east of Chile, in the Atacama Desert, the one MW Calama Solar 3 project has been designed to supply energy to Codelco’s Chuquicamata mine, the world’s biggest open pit copper mine.

According to a statement released, "The new solar farm is the first facility worldwide able to generate and sell energy at market prices without the need for public subsidies of any kind."

Solarpack will sell the generated energy back to Codelco via a long term agreement, the duration of which was not detailed. It will additionally operate and manage the plant.

The Spanish company added that 100 kW of the Calama Solar 3 project has been dedicated to R&D for three different photovoltaic module types: cadmium telluride, CIGS (copper, indium, gallium, selenium); and double concentrated silicone (2x).
